August 2010, Dubai - Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa was delighted to host the first in a series of marine enrichment activities organized by Trakhees-EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) in partnership with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) and the Marine Resources Research Center – Ministry of Environment & Water, as part of the resorts ongoing environmental and green initiative program.
Local EEG associates and student members aged between 5-16 years, joined resort staff and representatives from Trakhees-EHS headed by Dr. Hamad Al Falasi & the Marine Resources Research Center to release 1000 Acanthopagrus cuvieri, more commonly known as Silvery Black Porgy fish into the sea along the resort’s 800 metre beach. | | (L-R) Fredrik Reinisch (General Manager of Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa),Dr. Hamad Al Falasi (Trakhees-EHS), EEG volunteer & Khaled (EEG representative) | The fish which come from the Sparidae family and mainly feed on crustaceans and mollusks were brought by the Ministry of Environment & Water from their centre in Umm Al Quwain and were released into a natural coral snorkeling area along the beach at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa. Al Boom diving Centre based at the resort have also placed artificial reef modules in the sea, known as ‘Reef Balls’ to which are the safest and most effective way of creating a sustainable marine reef habitat.
Fredrik Reinisch, General Manager of Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa said ‘The preservation and enhancement of the natural environment at the resort is of paramount importance to us and we are very pleased to have participated in this project. We hope the student volunteers enjoyed the event and continue to develop their understanding and support of the environment. We look forward helping with another fish release project towards the end of the year.’ | | All student volunteers and staff who participated in the fish release activity |
EEG Chairperson, Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi said, “We must inculcate the habit of preserving our marine life and wildlife in students from the very beginning. It is but imperative that they realize that we cannot take our marine life for granted. EEG is happy to partner with Trakhees-EHS and the Marine Resources Research Center for this enriching experience. I would also like to thank the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa for being such gracious hosts.”
