| | Lateral Water Hazard: | |
Many golfers see the rules as quite daunting but they are mainly there to assist the player in difficult circumstances.
I see many players play the first Hole at the Resort course and unfortunately there are numerous balls that end up in the lake in front of the green. I am going to show you how the lateral water hazard rule can assist you in this circumstance. Most players having hit their shot in the water go straight to the water’s edge and drop a ball in the rough leaving themselves a down hill lie buried in the long grass with the water right in front of them and a small green to aim for. (see Picture 1)
The lateral water hazard rule found under 26:1 in the Rule book allows a player to drop under penalty of one stroke within 2 club lengths of the hazard line where the ball entered plus two more options which rarely get used which can be more beneficial for the player. These options are to go back to where you last played your previous shot (maybe in the fairway) or to go back as far as you like taking a straight line from the flag and the point that your ball last crossed the hazard line. This last option on the 1st hole would allow you to go back to a comfortable yardage and drop the ball on a flat lie in the fairway giving you the best opportunity for your next shot. (see Picture 2) | | | | Immovable Obstructions:
The most frequent question l get asked regarding the rules on the Resort course is surrounding the gatehouse on Hole # 5. Do l get a drop if l am under the gatehouse? (See Picture 3)
Rule 24:2 in the rule book regarding Immovable Obstructions clearly states that “Interference by an Immovable Obstruction occurs when a ball lies in or on the obstruction, or when the obstruction interferes with the players stance or intended swing, intervention on the line of play is not interference under this Rule” Therefore just because the gatehouse is in your way you cannot get relief from it unless you are standing on the concrete around it or your swing is impeded by the house or pillars of the gatehouse. (see Picture 4) | | | | Golf Tips | | Most of us use far too much effort to hit the ball a long way under the misconception that effort equals power - This couldn’t be further from the truth !!!! Instead of hitting at the ball ‘swish’ through into a finish. The louder you swish the more clubhead speed you will produce and the longer your shots will fly. To convince you of this and to develop your swish , turn your club upside down and grip just below the clubhead. Swing the grip end back and through trying to increase the sound of your swish. You will quickly notice that to achieve a louder swish you will need to lighten your grip and free the tension from your arms. Listen to where the sound of the swish begins , it should start about a foot behind the ball and get louder well into the follow through. The golf swing should be as simple as a backswing and a follow through with a swishh in the middle. - Stuart Fee PGA, Head Teaching Professional Jebel Ali Golf Resort |
